This table provides basic information for procurement of materials for use in low temperature services.

Carbon steel Grades 1 and 6 are impact tested at -50°F. Three and one half nickel Grade 3 material is impact tested for services down to -150°F.

A/SA333 pipe is available dual certified in Grades 1 and 6.

In addition to the materials listed, rolled and welded plate pipe manufactured in accordance with ASTM/ASME Specifications A/SA671 is available for low temperature service.

Plate Specifications A/SA516 Grades 60, 65 and 70 indicating their respective Tensile Strengths in ksi are normally used for the same services as Grades 1 and 6. Three and one half nickel material is manufactured from A/SA203 Grade D plate.

Charpy V-Notch Impact Testing is required.

Supplementary Requirements and Appendices are listed in some of these specifications.

Cast steel valves for low temperature service are normally offered in A/SA352 Grades LCB(65ksi Tensile) and LCC(70 ksi Tensile). Grade LCA(60ksi Tensile) material is listed in Specifications A/SA352, but is not a standard production item for valves.

*Specification A/SA203 Grade D has a Tensile Requirement of 65-85ksi. This meets Grade 3 requirements for the pipe and tube specifications addressed in this table. Grades B, E and F are available for items requiring higher tensile material, such as manufacture of Pressure Vessels.

  • The specifications listed and described above reflect the common materials required for manufacture and fabrication of items for use in Low Temperature Service.
Ordering information for these specifications is basically in accordance with the applicable General Requirements Specification such as A/SA20, A/SA703, A/SA999, A/SA960, A/SA961. In some cases, ordering information is written specifically for the specification. Any requirements included in the specification supersede the General Requirements instructions.
Information provided in this page is in accordance with the 2013 Edition of the ANNUAL BOOK OF ASTM STANDARDS
Refer to ASME B & PV Code Section II for non-identical A/SA requirements.
